HS - 2024
(a) I know where he was born. (Turn into simple sentence)
Ans:-I know his birthplace.
(b) If you do not study hard, you will fail. (Make it a compound sentence)
Ans:- Study hard or you will fail.
(c) He leads a most unhappy life.  (Turn into exclamatory)
Ans:- What unhappy life he leads!
(d) Very few metals are as precious as gold. (Change it into comparative degree)
Ans:- Gold is more precious than most other metals.
(e) Only Anita can do this. (Make it negative without changing the meaning) 
Ans:- None but Anita can do it.
(f) Who does not wish to be happy? (Make it assertive)
Ans:- Everybody / everyone wishes to be happy.
(g) Though he was poor, he was happy. (Make it a simple sentence)
Ans:- (i) Inspite of poverty, he was happy.
Or 
(ii) Despite poverty, he was happy.

HS - 2023
(a) This fact is too evident to require any proof. (Use 'so...that' instead of 'too...to')
Ans:- This fact is so evident that it does not require any proof. 
(b) I shall remember your help forever.  (Make it negative without changing the meaning)
Ans:- I shall never forget your help. 
(c) Having completed her project here she returned to her native country. (Change it into a complex sentence)
Ans:- Because she completed her project here, she returned to her native country.
(d) She is the tallest girl in the classroom. (Change it into comparative degree)
Ans:- She is the taller than any other girl in the classroom. 
(e) No one can do this. (Make it interrogative)
Ans:- Can anyone do this?
(f) There is a slight difference between the two shades. (Rewrite the sentence by using the adjective form of difference')
Ans:- The two shades are slightly different.
(g) As he was ill, he could not appear in the examination. (Change it into a simple sentence)
Ans:- He was unable to appear in the examination because of his illness.

HS - 2022
(a) Is this kind of dress to wear in school? (Make it an assertive sentence)
Ans:- This is not the kind of dress to wear in school.
(b) He worked hard to pass the examination. (Make it a complex sentence) HS-2002, 2006
Ans:-He worked so hard that he passed the examination.
(c) Kindly do me a favour ___ (Add a question tag) HS-2007
Ans:- Kindly do me a favour, will you?
(d) Atul is the best boy in the class. (Change it into positive degree) HS-2020
Ans:- No other boy in the class is as good as Atul.
(e) I shall remember your kindness forever. (Make it negative without changing the meaning)
Ans:- I shall not never forget your kindness.
(f) Everyone wishes to be happy. (Make it interrogative)
Ans:- Who doesn't wish to be happy?
(g) On seeing the lion, he ran away. (Make it a compound sentence)
Ans:- He saw the lion and ran away.

(a) Why waste time in this fruitless occupation? (Make it assertive)
Ans:-There is no use wasting time on this fruitless occupation.
(b) It is often difficult to speak the truth.(Make it negative without changing the meaning)
Ans:-It is not always easy to speak the truth.
(c) Being ill, he could not attend school. (Make it a compound sentence)
Ans:-He was ill and he couldn't attend the school.
(d) On seeing the lion, he ran away. (Make it a complex sentence)
Ans:-When he saw the lion, he ran away.
(e) The students who are good do their homework regularly.(Make it a simple sentence)
Ans:-Good students do their homework regularly.
(f) Atul is the best boy in the class. (Change it into positive degree)
Ans:-No other boy in the class is as good as Atul.

HS - 2019
(a) Your hair is very lovely. (Make it an exclamatory sentence)
Ans:-How lovely your hair is!
(b) The Bhupen Hazarika Xetu at Dhola Sadiya is the longest bridge in India. (Channe it into positive degree)
Ans:-No other bridge in India is as long as the Bhupen Hazarika Xetu at Dhole Sadiya.
(c) I tried every plan. (Make it negative without changing the meaning)
Ans:-I left no plan untried.
(d) He wants me to help him. (Make it a complex sentence)
Ans:-He wants that I should help him.
(e) The enemy fled as soon as they saw us. (Make it a compound sentence)
Ans:-The enemy saw us and they left at once.
(f) A stone that is rolling gathers no moss. (Make it a simple sentence)
Ans:-A rolling stone gathers no moss.

HS - 2018
(a) This is one of the best colleges in the North. (change it into comparative degree)
Ans:-This is better than other colleges in the North.
(b) You are richer than I. (Make it negative without changing the meaning)
Ans:-I am not as rich as you are.
(c) There is no smoke without fire. (Make it affirmative without changing the meaning)
Ans:-Where there is smoke, there is fire.
(d) We heard of her failure. (Make it a complex sentence)
Ans:-We heard that she had failed.
(e) He admitted that he had done wrong.(Make it a compound sentence)
Ans:-He did wrong and he admitted it.
(f) Unless you work hard, you will fail. (Make it a compound sentence)
Ans:- Work hard or you will fail.

HS - 2017
(a) The Brahmaputra is the longest river in India. (change into positive degree)
Ans:-No other river in India is as long as the Brahmaputra.
(b) Everybody wishes to be happy. (Make it interrogative)
Ans:-Who doesn't wish to be happy?
(c) Only Ram was present there. (Make it negative without changing the meaning)
Ans:-None but Ram was present there.
(d) He desired that I should go there. (Make it a simple sentence)
Ans:-He desired me to go there.
(e) He is so lazy that he cannot shine in life. (Make it a simple sentence)
Ans:-He is too lazy to shine in life.

(a) I have some money in my pocket. (Turn it into a negative sentence)
Ans:-I am not without money in my pocket.
(b) He left no stone unturned. (change into affirmative)
Ans:-He turned every stone.
(c) I have no time to spare.(Turn it into a complex sentence)
Ans:-I have no time that I can spare.
(d) As soon as I see him, he left the place. (rewrite the sentence using 'hardly ... when)'
Ans:-Hardly did I see him when he left the place.
(e) Only Ram can do this. (Turn it into a negative sentence)
Ans:-None but Ram can do this.
(f) I know his name. (Turn it into a complex sentence)
Ans:-I know what his name is.
(g) He is the most intelligent boy in the class. (change into a comparative degree)
Ans:-He is more intelligent than any other boy in the class.
(h) He can speak English well, ...? (Ass a question tag)
Ans:-He can speak English well, can't he?
(i) He promised that he would give me a book.(Rewrite the sentence using 'promise' as noun)
Ans:-His promise was that he would give me a book.

HS - 2010
(a) In spite of his poverty, he was honest. (Turn it into a complex sentence)
Ans:-Though he was poor yet he was honest.
(b) If I knew this before. (Turn it into an assertive sentence)
Ans:-I wish that I knew this before.
(c) Everybody must admit that he is a good musician.(Turn it into negative)
Ans:-Nobody can deny that he is a good musician.
(d) He is too lazy to shine in life. (Use 'so....that')
Ans:-He is so lazy that he cannot shine in life.
(e) Having done his work, he left the place. (Turn into a compound sentence)
Ans:-He has done his work and left the place.
(f) The captain did not agree to this? (Add a question tag)
Ans:-The captain did not agree to this, did he?
(g) The dog is the most faithful animal. (Rewrite in comparative degree)
Ans:-The dog is more faithful than any other animal.
(h) We are not displeased with your work. (Make it affirmative)
Ans:-We are pleased with your work.
(i) We believe that he is innocent. (Turn it into a simple sentence)
Ans:-We believe him to be innocent.

HS - 2009
(a) No sooner did he see me than he began to weep.(Make it affirmative)
Ans:-As soon as he saw me, he began to weep.
(b) I can never forget your kindness. (Turn it into interrogative sentence)
Ans:-Can I ever forget your kindness?
(c) He is the best boy in the class.(change into a comparative degree)
Ans:-He is better than any other boy in the class.
(d) I have no money to spare.(Turn it into a complex sentence)
Ans:-I have no money that I can spare.
(e) He is too weak to walk. (Rewrite the sentence using 'so ... that')
Ans:-He is so weak that he cannot walk.
(f) She not only made a promise but kept it. (Make it a simple sentence)
Ans:-Besides making a promise, he kept it.
(g) Everybody must admit that Radha is an honest girl.(Turn it into negative)
Ans:-Nobody can deny that Radha is an honest girl.
(h) Please lend me some money,....? (Add a question tag)
Ans:-Please lend me some money, will you/won't you?
(i) The enemy fled as soon as they said us.(Turn into a compound sentence)
Ans:-The enemy said us and left soon.

(a) Everest is the highest mountain in the world. (change into comparative degree)
Ans:-Everest is higher than any other mountain in the world.
(b) God alone can save him. (Make it negative)
Ans:-None but God can save him.
(c) Every man loves his own country. (Make it interrogative)
Ans:-Who doesn't love his own country?
(d) Only those boys who are industrious can shine in life. (Make it a simple sentence)
Ans:-Only industrious boys can shine in life.
(e) In spite of his poverty, he is happy. (Make it a complex sentence)
Ans:- Though he is poor yet he is happy.
(f) Raju is so good that he cannot harm anybody. (Use 'too...to')
Ans:-Raju is too good to harm anybody.
(g) If you try you will succeed. (Rewrite it as a compound sentence)
Ans:- Try and you will success.
(h) He left no plan untried. (Make it affirmative)
Ans:- He tried every plan.

(c) He tried all plans. (Make it negative without changing the meaning)
Ans:-He left no plan untried.

Ans:-Unless you work you will fail.

(a) I am older than you. (Add the proper tag question to the statement)
Ans:-I am older than you, ain't I?
(b) There is a slight difference between the two shades. (Rewrite the sentence by using the adjective form of 'difference')
Ans:-The two shades are slightly different from each other.
(c) He worked hard to pass the examination. (Make it a complex sentence)
Ans:-He worked hard so that he could pass the examination.
(d) Is this the kind of dress to wear in school? (Make it an assertive sentence)
Ans:-This is the kind of dress to wear in school.
(e) There is no smoke without fire. (Convert it into an affirmative sentence)
Ans:-Every fire has smoke.

(b) Reena is the tallest girl in the class. (Rewrite the sentence using 'taller' of 'tallest')
Ans:-Reena is taller than any other girl in the class.
(c) It is possible that Mr. Baruah will help you.(Rewrite the sentence using 'may')
Ans:-Mr. Baruah may help you.
(d) The mangoes are so cheap that they cannot be sweat. (Rewrite the sentence using 'too')
Ans:-The mangoes are too cheap to be sweat.
(e) He wants me to go. (Turn it into a complex sentence)
Ans:-He wants me that I should go.

Ans:-I was certain that I would pass the examination.
(d) Having finished his work he went home. (Turn it into a complex sentence)
Ans:-He went home after he had finished his work.
(e) We can never forget his kindness to us. (Change it into interrogative)
Ans:-Can we ever forget his kindness to us?
(f) We should love those who live near us. (Rewrite in comparative degree)
Ans:- We should love our neighbour.
(g) Only John was present there. (Make it negative without changing the meaning)
Ans:- None but John was present there.
(h) Everybody knows him. (Make it interrogative)
Ans:-(i) Does everybody know him?

(h) The boy is too poor to buy his text books. (Rewrite the sentence using 'so ... that')
Ans:-The boy is so poor that he cannot buy his text books.

HS - 2001
(a) Silver is not as valuable as gold. (change into a comparative degree)
Ans:-Gold is more valuable than silver.
(b) He is competent for the post. (Make it negative without changing the meaning)
Ans:-He is not incompetent fot the post.
(c) No one can do this. (Make it interrogative)
Ans:-Can anyone do this?
(d) There is no cloud without a silver lining. (Make it affirmative)
Ans:-Every cloud has a silver lining.
(e) Nilu is so weak that she cannot move. (Rewrite it as a simple sentence)
Ans:-Nilu is too weak to move.
(f) He promised to help me. (Turn it into a complex sentence)
Ans:-He promised to help me. (Rewrite the sentence by replacing 'only' with 'none')
(g) Only he can do it.
Ans:-None but he can do it.


Change the following sentences into negative without changing the meaning.
1. I like my colleagues.
ans- I do not dislike my colleagues.

2. Kodaikanal is cooler than Ooty.
ans- Ooty is not as cool as Kodaikanal.

3. Mary is prettier than Alice.
ans- Alice is not as pretty as Mary.

4. The pen is mightier than the sword.
ans- The sword is not as mighty as the pen.

5. I was doubtful whether it was you.
ans- I was not sure whether it was you.

6. He is too short to touch the ceiling.
ans- He is not tall enough to touch the ceiling.

7. The water is too cold for us to go swimming.
ans- The water is not warm enough for us to go swimming.

8. He is too proud to beg.
ans- He is so proud that he will not beg.

9. The girl forgot to bring her violin.
ans- The girl did not remember to bring her violin.

Change into affirmative sentence
(i) Nobody will deny that I am right.
Ans:- Everybody will accept that I am right.
(ii) I saw nothing in the bag but husk and dust.
Ans:-I saw only dust and husk in the bag.
(iii) No sooner did she see me than she began to run.
Ans:- As soon as she saw me she began to run.
